An epidural injection is an interventional procedure in which an anti-inflammatory substance such as corticosteroid is injected into the epidural space surrounding the spinal cord and spinal nerves, aiming to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pressure on nerves to relieve pain.

Simply put, when there is inflammation or pressure on spinal nerves due to a herniated disc or stenosis, it causes severe pain that may extend to the leg or arm. An epidural injection delivers anti-inflammatory medication directly to the inflamed area to reduce swelling and pain. The effect may last weeks or months.
