Chronic facial pain has multiple and diverse causes. Accurate diagnosis is essential as each cause requires a different treatment approach.

Trigeminal neuralgia is the most well-known cause of severe facial pain. It usually results from a blood vessel compressing the nerve at its exit from the brainstem. This compression causes abnormal pain signals.

Temporomandibular joint problems cause pain in the jaw, ear, and face. Shingles in the trigeminal nerve area may cause chronic pain persisting after the rash heals. Chronic sinusitis and dental pain are common causes that should be ruled out.
