Causes of Shoulder Pain

Learn about common shoulder pain causes with Dr. Saleh Atiyah pain specialist in Amman

The shoulder is the most mobile and flexible joint in the body, making it susceptible to multiple problems causing pain and movement restriction. It consists of several structures including the main joint, acromioclavicular joint, rotator cuff tendons, and bursa. Any problem in these structures can cause pain affecting daily activities.

Rotator cuff tendinitis is among the most common causes of shoulder pain, especially in people who frequently use their arms above head level such as painters and athletes. It occurs due to repetitive friction of tendons against the bony arch above them, causing inflammation, swelling, and pain when raising the arm.

Rotator cuff tears range from partial to complete. Partial tears are common with aging and may not always cause symptoms. Complete tears cause noticeable weakness in arm raising and pain especially at night. Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and ultrasound or MRI imaging.
